Hot sauce – BBC

8th March 2007 • Dave

Dragon’s Den is compulsive viewing in this house and I watched spellbound a couple of weeks ago when Levi Roots (aka Keith) made his seemingly inept pitch to the Dragons with an acoustic guitar and a ditty about a medium to hot tomato sauce but not such a hot grasp of his financial projections. Viewers were instantly charmed by Levi’s warmth and a couple of the dragons spotted the Sauce’s marketable potential and invested in the product to the tune of £50,000!

For the past fortnight we have been speculating at work about the future of Reggae Reggae Sauce and whether or not we would be able to find somewhere we could order a bottle to try. Anyway, while I was away in Liverpool on Wednesday the world seems to have gone Reggae Reggae Sauce mad. Apparently after hearing Sainsbury’s had secured a distribution deal, yesterday lunch time two of my colleagues went skipping into the supermarket like excited children to see who would be the first to spot a bottle of the sauce. Needless to say it did not take them very long to locate and purchase a bottle of Reggae Reggae Sauce. As I walked through the door first thing this morning, yours truly was proudly presented with said bottle!

I tried Reggae Reggae Sauce at lunch time as a dip for chicken nuggets and it really is very tasty. I was expecting it to be slightly thicker and to have a shelf life longer than 5 days. My main concern is that I will be sick to death of the Reggae Reggae Sauce song long before I have had enough of the sauce itself. Apparently the track will be available from all reputable and some not so reputable download sites and could chart next week with the proceeds going to the Comic Relief appeal.

Strange week

24th February 2007 • Dave

It has been an odd week really with one thing and another.

I awoke today to learn about the latest incident to beset the British public transport system. A email from a concerned friend was the first I new of the Virgin train derailment in the Northwest. I usually get an SMS alert sent to my mobile phone from the BBC when there is major breaking news. Not sure why it didn’t work this time.

This morning I watched open-mouthed to the coverage of the aftermath on Sky news. It’s tragic that a lady lost her life as a result of the accident. My thoughts are with her family. It seems extraordinary that there weren’t more fatalities as the train was apparently travelling at speeds above 90 miles per hour! Some of the wounded including the driver were taken to the Royal Preston Hospital which is just across the road from where I lived until March last year. I was a little shaken on hearing the news as I use the west coast line regularly, as do a number of my friends. Regular readers will know the northwest of England is a region of UK which is very close to my heart. It was a service which I would have been likely to use had I been going to visit friends in Preston for the weekend, which I often do. Had I been on that train I would have been disembarked at Preston, a couple of stops before where the incident occurred.

As it was, on Friday evening I was sinking a few pints of a beer called Saint David’s ale in the New Inn at Claines. I ended up in the award winning plough (CAMRA Worcester pub of the year) at quarter to 12 and stumbled into my flat at around 1AM. I’m really chuffed for the landlord Matt on his achievement, he has worked hard to turn the Plough around. Matt is a really decent bloke who often stands round the front of the bar keeping it real rubbing shoulders with his customers.

In other news I have successfully negotiated a deal with my landlord to buy the apartment where I live. I’ve had a mortgage agreed in principle with a lender, the surveyor has given the property the thumbs up and I have engaged a solicitor to start work on searches etc. The initial costs are astonishing, as is the amount one ends up paying back over the life of the mortgage. If all goes to plan the purchase should be complete by the end of March.

It has been a good week for Liverpool FC scoring 6 goals in 4 days. 2 of them away against the champions of Europe! Keeping everything crossed. It is good to dream!

Speaking of which I have been having some very odd dreams lately. Last night I dreamt about the dishwasher at work and on Thursday night I had a long telephone conversation with Ricky Tomlinson!

I’m going. TTFN

Five Live – It’s Radio Bloke from the BBC – Independent

18th February 2007 • Dave

Ah say what you will about the supposed decline of 5 Live. Where else would a radio station give over 3 hours to explore the issues surrounding people who suffer with mental health problems? Where else can you hear the likes of: Alan Green, Arlo White, Jane Garvey, Jonathan Agnew, Mark Kermode, Mickey Clark, Peter Allen, Rhod Sharp, Victoria Derbyshire, etc. Give me FiveLive over TalkSport any day of the week.

Manchester Tops Second City Poll – BBC

10th February 2007 • Dave

Naturally we all know that both cities lag a long way behind the number one city in the UK Liverpool Or should that be Preston? Or even Worcester now that it looks pretty certain that I will be buying a property here. Hoping to agree a figure with a seller subject to contract next week.

In other news, it has been snowing quite a lot. I am in the process of getting to know Windows Vista a bit more. Oh and the Worcester pub of the year as decided by the folks over at CAMRA is one which I frequently visit. I won’t preempt their announcement which will be made public soon.

Finding a deposit

2nd February 2007 • Dave

So this is it, crunch time. I learned yesterday that my landlord wants to sell his flat/my home and yours truly has been served with two months notice! So what to do?

Find something else to rent? Head back to Preston where the people are friendlier and the beer is better? Get a mortgage? Hang on. Did I just say get a mortgage?

Is that not something your parents do. Does that not involve: solicitors, estate agents, surveyors and an endless procession of people just looking for a gullible first time buyer to rip off. Responsibility, commitment, unfathomable amounts of money and time and a bank who pretty much own everything really come to mind. Bank shareholders getting rich from my interest repayments. Oh no thank you sir. But does that not happen anyway whether I am paying my own mortgage or one which belongs to someone else?

Sure it’s the dream of many, but honestly the notion of really owning property has never really appealed to me. As that bloke in Crocodile Dundee said, it is like two flees arguing over the dog they live on. You cannot take it with you when you die. So unless you want to have something for your kids to inherit, what is the point?

Well I guess the point is to accrue some equity. Although I have never been terribly good at that either. I am not very proficient at this Capitalism lark. I mean what about all those varieties of food in the supermarket? Just give me something that I can taste and is vaguely nutritious; Friends with whom I can laugh; A roof over my head and so on.

Having said that I spoke to an independent adviser today and he seemed to think that my getting a mortgage was not completely out of the question. So watch this space!
